Upcoming Concerts 5/5-5/12

The last few weeks have been packed with great shows, so it's about time we catch our breath, drink a cinco-de-beer, and chill. Wait, oh wait, actually, wtf, this is SFCritic, we go to show up an down the avenues. So here is a list of shows for the week.

The Flobots @ The Bottom of the Hill, May 5th ($15) When hip hop meets violins and cellos, combined with indie rock edge, its safe to say the sound is sufficiently different, in that oh this is different, I like trying new things kind of way. With socially conscious lyrics, and grooving beats, the show will be perfect for the intimate venue.

Wallpaper @The Independent, May 7th ($15) Boxed in by layers of percussive funk, dark synthesizer blurt and crushing bass, Eric Frederic lost himself inside of Ricky Reed, the character he'd long ago conceived as Wallpaper.'s frontman. He gave in to Ricky's rampant narcissism, love for party and supreme indifference, and as a result, discovered the guiding duality behind Doodoo Face, the album: There's sadness inside all that celebration. A little madness too.

Kate Nash @ The Bottom of the Hill, May 8th ($20) The cute British singer is deceptively sharp witted and might slash a guy with her banter. Her bubbly pop is fun, catchy, and downright good. It's surprising she's playing at such a small venue, don't expect this to happen again.

The Besnard Lakes @ The Indepedent, May 10th ($12/$14) The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night is a dark bliss-out that folds the eerie guitar epics of the band's breakthrough, The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse, into a wall of affected drones and atmospherics. The toughened immediacy and grit that gives the form a much-needed shove over the cliffs makes for a haunting, provocative swan dive into the crushing tide.
